Former Merlin Entertainments CEO takes up chairman role at NEC Group

The NEC Group, whose portfolio includes the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, revealed that Sir Nick Varney had been appointed as its non-executive chairman with effect fromm September 1 this year.

He brings considerable experience with over 30 years’ experience working in the tourism and leisure industry.

Varney was CEO of Merlin Entertainments from its inception in 1999 to his retirement in November, 2022 and oversaw a period of extraordinary growth for Merlin, transforming the business into a global provider of memorable experiences for over 60 million guests every year.

"We are delighted to welcome Nick as Chair at such an exciting time for our business," said NEC Group CEO Melanie Smith CBE.

"We have ambitious plans to transform our site into the UK’s entertainment and leisure capital, offering an ever-evolving set of experiences for everyone to explore and enjoy. Nick’s deep expertise in the leisure sector will be invaluable as we execute our plans."

Sir Nick Varney added: "I am delighted to be joining the Board of the NEC Group and look forward to working closely with Mel and the executive team.

The NEC Group's portfolio also includes the International Convention Centre (ICC), Vox Conference Venue (Vox), bp pulse LIVE and Utilita Arena Birmingham.
