Coventry’s Albany Theatre unveils £3.5m transformation
2-Tone icon Pauline Black and Coventry MP Zarah Sultana were among the special guests at a celebration of The Albany Theatre’s transition into Coventry’s most accessible community arts venue.
Cllr Mal Mutton, lord mayor of Coventry, officially opened the new facilities, which over the past two years have undergone a £3.5 million transformation.
More than 450 people toured the Albany Road venue’s revamped arts and community spaces – comprising two studio theatres, two flexible spaces, a new bar and cafe, a spacious foyer and a changing places toilet.
Cllr Mutton unveiled a plaque in recognition of her late husband Cllr John Mutton, a major supporter of The Albany over the years.
The unswerving commitment of trustee Clive Benfield to the theatre was also recognised, with one of the new studios named in his honour.
Affectionately known as ‘Mr Coventry’ to his colleagues, Clive’s business acumen was a driving force in guiding the theatre through past, current and future development works.
Compered by local actor and friend of the theatre Paul Nolan, ‘Generate Launch’ showcased different workshops in the new studio spaces and performances on the stage by local community groups in a celebration of the city’s diverse cultural talent.
The celebratory event featured performances from Sing for Change, Highlife Project, Elite Dance, Godiva Academy of Performing Arts, Moving Space Theatre, Ankura School of Dance and Impact Steel Band, who are now based at The Albany.
Kevin Shaw, chief executive and artistic director, said: “The skills demonstrated at Generate Launch by an incredibly diverse range of talented performers of all ages and backgrounds were extraordinary.
“The Albany is all about inclusivity and the representation of all of Coventry’s communities.
“Our guests were blown away by what that means on the stage.”
David Meredith, chair of The Albany Theatre Trust, said: “Trustees, volunteers and staff have been working for over 12 years to get to this point – the moment when The Albany Theatre is established as Coventry’s leading and most accessible professionally managed community arts venue.
“The excitement and joy of the moment was palpable and transparent. The audience and performers – every single person – were thrilled to bits!”
Cllr Mutton added: “I can only thank everyone who has been involved in bringing this project to fruition.
“The facilities are amazing, and I know the theatre will go from strength to strength.
“They’re a great asset for the wider community of Coventry and will allow the creative arts to be enjoyed by all of us, not just a few.
“My late husband John would’ve been so proud to see what’s been achieved here.
“The contribution this theatre makes to the life of our city and the lives of young people in particular is invaluable.”
